Determining Home Care Costs

According to the Cost of Care Survey, an annual report by Genworth, in-home care costs less than other care options like adult daycare, assisted living and skilled nursing. The cost of non-medical home care varies depending on where you live and the amount of care needed. The best way to budget is to determine the number of hours of care your loved one needs each week.

Your Frequently Asked Questions on Paying for Care

What factors determine the cost of home care services?

The cost of home care is typically based on the number of care hours needed and the level of assistance required. For example, someone who needs a caregiver for a few hours a week will pay less overall than someone needing daily or 24-hour care. Geography also plays a role – hourly rates can vary depending on the local cost of living and wage standards in your area. Additionally, specialized or complex needs may be priced differently due to the training involved. After conducting a no-obligation in-home assessment, a SYNERGY HomeCare professional will carefully listen to your needs and create a customized care solution, including the hours of care needed for your loved one, so you understand what your home care costs will be before services begin.

Does Medicare or health insurance cover in-home care?

Medicare will pay for short-term home health care (skilled nursing or therapy at home, usually after a hospital stay), but it generally does not cover non-medical home care services like in-home companion care or assistance with daily tasks like bathing and dressing. Regular private health insurance is similar – it’s geared toward medical treatment, not day-to-day caregiving. However, there are other options: many seniors use long-term care insurance policies to reimburse home care costs, and some some Medicare Advantage plans do provide cost coverage for non-medical home care services, commonly referred to as “in-home support.” Plan benefits may vary, and we are happy to help you navigate your financial options for care.

Can long-term care insurance be used to pay for home care?

Yes, if you have a long-term care insurance policy, it often covers in-home care services as well as assisted living or nursing home care. Each policy is different, but typically after a deductible or waiting period, the insurance will reimburse costs for a caregiver to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) like dressing, bathing, and eating. We can help families understand and activate their long-term care benefits – for instance, by providing the necessary documentation of care hours and services. Using long-term care insurance can significantly offset home care expenses, allowing clients to receive the support they need at home while leveraging benefits they are entitled to receive.

Are there benefits for Veterans that help pay for home care?

Absolutely. Eligible U.S. military veterans (and in some cases their spouses) may access VA programs that fund home care. A common one is the Aid & Attendance pension benefit, which provides monthly payments for veterans who need assistance with daily living. Additionally, the VA Homemaker/Home Health Aide program can directly provide or pay for in-home caregivers through VA’s community care providers. If your loved one is a Veteran, SYNERGY HomeCare can guide you toward these resources. We’ll help you determine what VA benefits might apply and assist with the paperwork or coordination required. Many of our Veteran clients use these benefits to cover home care costs, ensuring they receive quality care without undue financial strain.
