Fall and Injury Prevention

Safety First. Encouragement Always.

As we get older, our risk of falling increases. Things like climbing stairs, getting in and out of the shower, or even just sitting down and standing up can put us at risk of an injury from falling. In fact, statistics show that more than one out of four older adults fall each year.

As more older adults choose to age in place in the comfort of their own home, it’s important to ensure that the home provides a safe environment. Preventing falls is one of the best ways to do that.

SYNERGY HomeCare’s “Safety First” fall and injury prevention program helps seniors prevent falls and reduces the fear of falling, an all-too-common issue that can lead to reduced physical activity. Our specially trained in-home caregivers also provide support when recovering after a fall or injury.

SYNERGY HomeCare offers no obligation home assessments.

Your Frequently Asked Questions on Fall and Injury Prevention

Why is fall prevention so important for seniors at home?

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for older adults. As we age, factors like reduced balance, weaker vision, or home hazards can make falls more likely and more dangerous (often resulting in broken bones or hospitalizations). Preventing falls helps seniors avoid these injuries and maintain their independence longer. It’s not just about safety – it also gives seniors and their families peace of mind. When a senior knows their home environment is safer and that someone is there to assist them, they feel more confident moving around, which keeps them more active and healthy overall. In short, fall prevention is key to living securely and comfortably in one’s own home.

What does the “Safety First” fall prevention program include?

Our Safety First program takes a proactive approach to minimize fall risks. We begin with a home safety assessment, identifying any tripping hazards (like loose rugs or poor lighting) and recommending simple modifications or assistive devices (such as grab bars in the bathroom or improved lighting in hallways). Caregivers then implement daily fall prevention practices: they help keep walkways clear, encourage appropriate exercises to improve strength and balance, and closely assist during risky activities like climbing stairs or bathing. We also educate seniors on safe movement techniques and footwear. Essentially, the program is a mix of home environment improvements, caregiver assistance, and client education – all aimed at preventing accidents before they happen.

How does in-home care help my loved one avoid falls day-to-day?

Our caregivers serve as an extra set of hands and eyes to support your loved one’s stability. Day-to-day, they can physically assist with transfers (for example, getting up from bed or a chair, or steadying your mom as she steps in and out of the shower). They’ll walk alongside your loved one if they feel unsteady, carry items for them so their hands are free to use a cane or handrail, and remind them to use mobility aids if prescribed. Caregivers also encourage safe habits, like slowing down and using proper footwear, and they’re trained to spot signs of dizziness or fatigue and respond appropriately. By having a caregiver present, many slip-and-trip situations are avoided because someone is always there to notice and help, keeping everyday routines safe.

Do you provide support after a senior has fallen or had an injury?

Yes, our fall prevention services extend to fall recovery support. If your loved one has experienced a fall or is returning home after injury treatment, we adjust our care to aid their recovery and prevent re-injury. This can include helping with personal tasks and chores if they need to rest a healing injury, providing companionship to boost morale and reduce fear of falling again, and guiding them through light doctor-approved exercises to rebuild strength. We’ll also reassess the home for any new changes needed . Our aim is to help seniors recover confidently, address any fear or anxiety they have about falling again, and put extra precautions in place so they can regain independence at home without worry.
