Give Yourself a Summer Break With These Essential Self-Care Tips for Caregivers

With schools closing for the summer, many caregivers are going to find themselves taking on additional responsibilities. As these demands of the season increase, it’s easy to forget about your own needs in between caring for an older loved one and keeping the kids entertained throughout the day.

Block Out Time for Yourself

Why: Around-the-clock caregiving causes burnout sooner rather than later. To help mitigate this stress and preserve your sanity, take short breaks throughout the day.

How: Reserve space in your schedule for “me-time.” Work these personal breaks into your daily routine, and make it into a habit.

Exercise and Eat Right

Why: Caregiving takes a physical toll on your body. In order to keep up with these physical demands, you’ll need the right fuel and level of fitness to adequately provide care. Physical activity is also a natural mood booster.

How: Incorporate at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise into your daily routine–this could be anything as simple as walks or gentle stretching. Plan and prepare balanced meals in advance. Meal planning not only saves you time throughout the week but also allows you to make sure you’re incorporating fruits, vegetables and other key nutrients into each meal.

Get Some Rest

Why: Giving yourself enough downtime every day is just as important as getting enough physical activity. Sleep can be a great “reset” at the end of a stressful day and is also key to staying sharp.

How: Similar to blocking out space for “me-time,” create a boundary in your schedule that you won’t cross when it comes to getting sleep. Develop a regular, relaxing bedtime routine, and let yourself be comfortable.

Be Social

Why: Caregiving can be isolating, especially if you spend most of your day with the same select few people. Social interaction not only offers additional emotional support, but it also keeps you from becoming too consumed with your day-to-day responsibilities.

How: Stay connected with other friends and family. Talk, text, call and do anything you can to stay up-to-date with others. Aim to get out at least once a week purely for your own social enjoyment.
