Beaumont Hospital opens an Acute Care Unit for Seniors

The elderly citizens of Oakland County have a new 26 bed inpatient unit specially design for them at Royal Oak Beaumont.  The purpose of the unit is to maximize recovery so that elderly patients return home with the quality of life they had prior to hospitalization.

The care is directed by Beaumont geriatricians, and nursing staff are trained in gerontology nursing.  They function as a team with care managers, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists and social workers that also specialize in geriatric care.

The unit includes:

  • Geriatric assessments to identify each patients needs.
  • Mobility protocol, that focuses on movement as a form of medicine.
  • 24/7 video monitoring of patients.
  • Nightly sleep protocol, using aromatherapy and warm blankets.
  • A dietary room service, encouraging nutrition and hydration.
  • Non-slip, non-glare, padded flooring to reduce fall injuries.
  • Lower beds that adjust for eases of transfer

Royal Oak Beaumont is the third largest Medicare hospital in the country.  Approximately 48% of its patients are over the age of 65.  The Center for Acute Care for the Elderly is designed for patients with a recent history of falls, delirium and dementia.  Patients that were functioning relatively independent prior to hospital admission.  Patients with acute illness such as; pneumonia, urinary tract infections or gastrointestinal bleeding.

The unit’s goal is to help the elderly patients maintain their function and independence during their hospital stay.

SYNERGY Home Care of Rochester applauds the initiative that Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital has taken to establish the “Center for Acute Care for the Elderly”.  As a provider of private duty home care to clients in Rochester, Troy and the surrounding communities, we thank them for their efforts.
