At just 19 years old, Samiriya Miles is already making a meaningful impact in the lives of the clients she serves. Currently studying pre-nursing, Samiriya’s passion for caregiving began long before she entered the healthcare field. Her journey started at only 14 years old when she helped care for her grandmother. After her grandmother passed away, the experience inspired her and motivated her to pursue a future in healthcare so she could continue helping others in the same compassionate way.
For Samiriya, caregiving is about much more than simply completing tasks. What she enjoys most is creating the best possible experience for her clients and helping them feel comfortable, safe, and cared for in their own homes. She believes one of the most important ways to do this is by treating every client’s home as if it were her own. If she notices something that needs to be cleaned or organized, she gladly goes above and beyond the duties of her job to help create an environment that feels safe, peaceful, and comfortable for her clients. One phrase her clients hear often is, “What else can I do for you?”
Samiriya also understands the importance of truly getting to know the people she cares for. She takes time to ask clients about their interests, passions, and favorite topics so they can build genuine connections. One client she cares for is deeply religious, and the two often spend time talking about God and faith together. In fact, Samiriya shared that she is even considering attending church with them someday. Another client is more introverted, but the two quickly bonded over their shared love of cats and food. Samiriya would even bring fried chicken for them to enjoy together while spending time talking and visiting.
Samiriya has built genuine friendships with many of her clients, and they often have a lot of fun together. She shared a story about running errands with one client who had her laughing the entire time. He was happily singing loudly without realizing it because of his hearing aids and kept turning to ask Samiriya if he was being too loud. Moments like these are some of the reasons she loves caregiving so much — the joy, connection, and meaningful relationships built along the way.
When asked what qualities make a great caregiver, Samiriya’s compassion and dedication shine through naturally. She is passionate about caring for others and says she does not do this work simply for money, but because she genuinely wants to help people and make a difference in their lives. She also credits caring for her grandmother with teaching her patience — a quality that continues to serve her well every day.
Caregiving has shaped Samiriya personally as much as professionally. She says the profession has made her more aware of people around her who may need assistance, and she now looks for opportunities to step in and help whenever she can. Another quality that makes Samiriya stand out is her ability to put her clients first, even when she may not be feeling her best herself. As she explained, “I’ve been sick before and I don’t want them to stress.” Instead, she focuses on helping her clients rest, feel comfortable, and recover.
For new caregivers hoping to succeed in the field, Samiriya offers this advice:
“You don’t have to have everything figured out in one day. It takes time to learn your client so you can best serve them. Take it one day at a time!”
Thank you, Samiriya, for the compassion, patience, and kindness you bring to your clients each day. Your heart for caregiving truly makes a difference.
