Living in Florida means enjoying warm weather and having access to beautiful beaches—but it also means preparing for hurricane season. For older adults, taking a few simple steps before a storm can make a big difference in staying safe and comfortable during an emergency.

Whether it’s a minor injury at home or an extended power outage after a hurricane, being prepared helps aging loved ones maintain their health and independence when disaster strikes.

Build a Well-Stocked First Aid Kit

Every senior should have an emergency kit that’s easy to access and checked regularly. Due to unique medical conditions, it is important to customize the first aid kit to fit your needs. Certain prescribed medications prevent the use of OTC ones, so make sure to talk with a healthcare provider about what’s appropriate for you or a loved one. If you know a storm is coming, it’s also a good idea to request prescription refills beforehand in case of store closures or road blockages.

Basic first aid kits should include:

  • Adhesive bandages in various sizes
  • Sterile gauze pads and medical tape
  • Antibacterial ointment
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Elastic bandage for sprains
  • Disposable gloves
  • Instant cold packs
  • Digital thermometer
  • Tweezers
  • Small scissors
  • Cotton balls and swabs

Important Medical Information

If emergency responders need to assist you, having information readily available can save valuable time.

Keep a waterproof folder with:

  • A list of current medications and dosages
  • Allergies
  • Medical conditions
  • Emergency contacts
  • Primary care doctor’s contact information
  • Copies of insurance cards

Prepare Before Hurricane Season Begins

Don’t wait until a storm is in the Gulf to begin preparing! Stores often run out of supplies quickly once a hurricane is forecast. Stock up on essential supplies such as water, nonperishable food, flashlights (with extra batteries), a radio, a portable phone charger or power bank, and cash in small bills.

Emergencies can be stressful. Pack a few familiar items to help make extended power outages or evacuations more manageable. This can include things like extra eyeglasses, a favorite blanket, books, puzzles, a small battery-powered fan, and comfortable clothes.

Have an Evacuation Plan

Know beforehand where you’ll go if an evacuation is ordered and how you will get there. In addition, have a loved one or caregiver check in before and after the storm. If you receive home care services, discuss your emergency plan with your care team well before hurricane season peaks.

Peace of Mind Starts with Preparation

No one can control the weather, but everyone can take steps to be better prepared. A stocked first aid kit, emergency supplies, and a well-thought-out hurricane plan can help older adults stay safer, reduce stress, and recover more quickly after severe weather.
