Companions play in providing the extra support seniors need during periods of cold, snowy weather.
Early this week, Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) introduced the Home Care for Seniors Act (S.3261), which is the companion to HR2878 in the House.
The bill amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow qualified distributions from health savings account for certain home care expenses. "Qualified home care" includes a contract to provide three or more of the following services in the residence of the service recipient: assistance with eating, assistance with toileting, assistance with transferring, assistance with bathing, assistance with dressing, assistance with continence, and medication adherence.
The Department of Health and Human Services must carry out a campaign to increase public awareness of the in-home service expenses that are eligible for tax-free distribution from HSAs.
Client testimonial
The compassionate care from SYNERGY HomeCare for Jeff's mom as she entered hospice made all the difference
"It was truly a blessing that we found SYNERGY. The caregivers were trained in caring for dementia patients and were able to work with my mother, while another company just wasn't able to do the job. The caregivers are excellent. Savka, in particular, took the time to read the Bible to my mom daily, which was very important to her. They were extremely compassionate towards the end when my mom was approaching hospice and did everything possible to make her comfortable. Milena was frequently rubbing my mom's back and shoulders to help her ease discomfort. Kayla was always positive and attentive. Overall, great care! Thanks to Ruth and her team, my mom was able to pass away peacefully in her home! Truly blessed to have had the SYNERGY team!" Jeff

“We know ongoing education and training not only improve the quality of care we provide our clients,” according to Ruth Busalacchi, owner, SYNERGY HomeCare, “they contribute to the success of our caregivers and their job satisfaction.”
Our caregivers are not required by law to be CNA certified. Approximately 60% of SYNERGY HomeCare's caregivers are CNA certified. Caregivers who are not certified and who have been employed with SYNERGY HomeCare for at least a year are now eligible to apply for a tuition grant to attend CNA training. Applicants are required to write an essay including why they are applying for the grant, how they will use the knowledge they gain, and why they should be awarded the grant. The grant recipient will, among other things, be expected to continue employment for at least two years. The grant is awarded annually.
“It’s OK to hang up”, was Bob’s response when asked what he learned after SYNERGY HomeCare presented a senior scams program at his independent living community in Greenfield, WI. That is a popular response from seniors in other communities and senior centers where the program has been offered.
Seniors don’t want to be rude and they fear the repercussions of hanging up. That’s what scammers count on. The longer they can keep you on the phone, the greater the likelihood is they’ll get you to share personal and financial information.
To learn more about senior scams, including the IRS Scam and the Grandparents Scam, and to schedule a presentation, contact Enid at 414-763-8368.
“I can’t wait to share this information with my friends,” said Lorrie after a presentation at her senior center. “They need to know about the Grandparent’s Scam and that they shouldn’t open suspicious emails with links and attachments.”
