Five Ways to Get Better about Asking for Help as a Caregiver

Asking for help seems like such a simple thing, but it's often far more complicated than you expect as a caregiver. There may be different types of help that you need, and that can be difficult to get. Other family members may not be consistent, either, which gives you other problems along the way. Practicing asking for the help you need can make a big difference.

When You Get the Urge, Speak up Right Then

You might find that you do get the urge to ask someone for some more help, but you wind up stifling it. That's not going to get you the help that you need. When you notice that you've got an urge to look for help or to ask someone for help, go ahead and speak up right then.

Divide up the Tasks

Just because you've got a long list of tasks that you need help with, that doesn't mean that one or two people have to help you with everything. You can even break down larger tasks into much smaller bits and ask different people to help with each of the tiny parts.

Ask a Family Member to Help You Be Accountable

If asking for help is really difficult, try asking a family member to help you be more accountable in asking for help. You might have them touch base with you and find out what types of tasks you've delegated and if you've let yourself keep feeling overwhelmed. They can help you to practice asking for help, too.

Say Yes More Often

It's entirely possible that you get more offers for help than you even realize you do. Start practicing saying "yes" more often when people do offer you help. Even if the help isn't entirely what you need right then, you can work with the person to modify what they're offering so that you and your family member get what you need.

Hire Respite Care Help

You don't have to frustrate yourself with offers of help that don't quite work for you, though. Hiring respite care help allows you to get the help that you need without having to worry about some of the other dynamics that maybe complicate the situation. Eldercare providers can lighten the load for you in ways that you may not have ever dreamed.

As you put yourself in this situation more often, it should get easier to ask for help on your caregiving journey. You can't keep doing everything on your own and you don't have to.
