Today, the term has resurfaced in the health care field as the buzzword to describe the toll it has taken on caregivers as they battle the ups and downs of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Compassion fatigue is often referred to as caregiver burnout, but the conditions are not the same. Compassion fatigue is more treatable than burnout, but it can be less predictable. While compassion fatigue may come on suddenly or without much warning, caregiver burnout typically develops over time.<\/p>\n<p>Some describe compassion fatigue as empathy fatigue, a biological and physiological response where you are so exhausted\u2014physically, emotionally, psychologically\u2014that it becomes difficult to care or feel for others. You feel \u201cdone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the fatigue doesn\u2019t stop when you\u2019ve finished caregiving for the day. You plop on the couch, turn on the TV, and there it is\u2014news of the pandemic crisis on every station. It\u2019s in the headlines; it\u2019s on the radio. When asking yourself these questions, respond to yourself as though you are caring for another person. Listen to your answers. Try not to put so many \u201cshoulds\u201d on your plate that it stresses you out even more. It\u2019s okay to lighten your plate. It\u2019s all about balance and getting yourself to a place where you feel good about taking time for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognize the warning signs<br \/>\n<\/strong>It\u2019s also important to recognize the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Insomnia<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Less interest in caregiving duties<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feeling more stress<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being traumatized by caregiving activities and functions<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Irritability<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Substance use\/abuse<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blaming others for your suffering<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Isolating yourself<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loss of pleasure in life<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical and mental fatigue<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bottling up your emotions<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feelings of hopelessness or powerlessness<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frequent complaining<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Overeating<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poor self-care<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Denial<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anger<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resentment toward the person you\u2019re caring for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these symptoms sound scary, they&#8217;re actually helpful as they are telling you that your \u201cgiving reserves are low,\u201d and sending a warning that it\u2019s time to rebalance your life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Respite care for family caregivers<br \/>\n<\/strong>While caring for your aging parent has been said to be a labor of love, it\u2019s still a weight on you.
