Understanding Medicare Advantage Coverage

At SYNERGY HomeCare, we understand that people are happiest and healthiest where they are most comfortable – in their own homes.

From hourly to around-the-clock care, we offer a wide range of services to help seniors confidently age in place.

If you or a loved one are currently covered or qualify for coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan, home care may be included within your benefit options. Read on to learn more about how Medicare Advantage may help cover the costs of non-medical home care.

What is Medicare Advantage?

To better understand Medicare Advantage, it can be helpful to know the four parts to Medicare:

  • Medicare Part A (hospital insurance)
  • Medicare Part B (medical insurance)
  • Medicare Part C (combines Part A, Part B, and usually Part D)
  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)

Medicare Part A and Part B are known as Original Medicare, and Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D are all provided through the federal government.

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is unique in that it allows recipients to outsource their federally-provided Original Medicare coverage through a private insurance company of their choice.

There are advantages and trade-offs to having a Medicare Advantage plan vs an Original Medicare plan, and you can learn more about the differences by visiting www.medicare.gov/health-drug-plans/health-plans or by calling the Medicare helpline at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Does Medicare Advantage cover home care?

While non-medical home care is not covered under Original Medicare, some Medicare Advantage plans do provide cost coverage for non-medical home care services. Because Medicare Advantage benefits can differ across private insurance plans, the degree to which a Medicare Advantage plan does or does not cover home care can also vary.

Medicare Advantage plans that do provide non-medical home care coverage typically refer to the benefit as in-home support. It is important to note that Medicare Advantage recipients typically need to opt-in to in-home support coverage, as it tends to be a supplementary Medicare Advantage benefit.

When speaking with an insurance company that offers a Medicare Advantage plan, ask about whether they offer an in-home support benefit that could cover companionship/homemaker services and personal care.
