Your senior\u2019s home might not be set up as well for mobility concerns as you or she would like. And if her home is not encouraging her to stay mobile, your senior might gradually lose the little bit of mobility that she does have left.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s Got Space in Rooms to Move Around<\/strong><\/p>\n
Within rooms and open spaces your senior needs to have the room to move around safely and easily. That means that if a room is packed too full, either with furniture or clutter, it might need to go elsewhere. This isn\u2019t something that your senior might agree to readily, though. It\u2019s difficult to make changes, even due to safety, that feel like a big compromise.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s Got Space Elsewhere, Too<\/strong><\/p>\n
There are other areas of concern, too. Hallways, doorways, and other tight spaces also need some space. This is especially true if your elderly family member uses larger assistive tools, like a walker or even a wheelchair. It might be necessary for your senior to consider clearing out anything extra that\u2019s in those areas or consider widening them if that\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s Able to See What\u2019s Going On<\/strong><\/p>\n
If your senior can\u2019t see where she\u2019s going or what\u2019s happening around her, mobility is that much more difficult. The lighting in your senior\u2019s home might need to be improved, either with brighter light bulbs or even by adding additional lighting. While you\u2019re at it, features like motion-sensing lights or voice-activated lights can be a huge help.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s Equipment to Help Her<\/strong><\/p>\n
Your senior might be familiar with some of the equipment that can help her mobility, like a walker, but there are other tools, too. Lift chairs, stair lifts, and even bathtub lifts are all equipment that can make everyday tasks so much easier for your senior. Having an adjustable bed might make life easier for your senior on those days when she\u2019s unable to get out of bed. A scooter can give her better mobility when she\u2019s out in public. It\u2019s worth doing some research to find out what other options she has available.<\/p>\n
Your senior may also need extra help to assist with mobility concerns. Home care providers can offer stability for her and handle tasks that make mobility easier and that can keep her from injuring herself. They can also teach both of you how to spot possible mobility concerns so that you can correct them as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
