Keeping the elderly and infirm out of long term care facilities by providing in-home care is a gratifying idea. Lucia Robelo, head of Miami’s recently opened Synergy HomeCare franchise, agrees.
“Synergy provides a great service for those who don’t need a full-time nurse, but who just need the basics,” said Robelo.
What’s more, Synergy is aware that need change. That’s why clients don’t sing contracts.
“We stay flexible so we can meet specific needs the minute the client needs them,” said Robelo.
The first order of business is a free home assessment, where staff evaluates needs and makes suggestions for, say, fall prevention. Social workers help families find their way through the morass of paperwork that insurance companied demand.
Before the political situation in Nicaragua forced her husband’s transfer to the United States, Robelo worked on legal compliance and business development for the Muro Group, a clinical and pharmaceutical company. Because so much research and development involved the elderly, she gained a great deal of experience.
“I found the elderly to be an enchanting sector of the population,” said Robelo.
Before that, she worked for the Nicaraguan government and the United Nations, developing special programs for underdeveloped countries.
With the abrupt change of lifestyle from leaving her family behind in Nicaragua to life in Miami, she felt she needed to do something fulfilling. Synergy and Robelo are a perfect match. Her compassion and good business sense equal success.
Some of the services Synergy provides include meal preparation, housekeeping, transportation, bathing and bathroom help, medication reminders, safety assistance and more.
“Our goal is to keep clients in their homes, so we provide complete services,’ said Robelo. “As a concierge, we take care of everything. Customized services are provided 24/7.”
A unique feature of Synergy HomeCare is keeping families connected. This is especially helpful when kids live out of town.
“Families can view and track care plans anywhere, anytime though an easy and secure Internet access,’ said Robelo. “And a team member is always just a phone call away, day or night.”
Caregivers undergo an intense screening and national background checks. All caregivers are trained and carefully matched to the client.
“We feel so strongly about it that I let my clients’ interview three caregivers to see who they want,’ said Robelo. Since having someone visit you in your home is such an invasion of privacy, it is very important that they like each other – fewer problems, better outcome.
“Our caregivers are the success of our company; they are the heart of our team,” she said.
There are 70 Synergy franchises around the country, but this is the first in Florida for the Phoenix, Arizona-based company.
