In fact, as many as half of all adults over age 65 are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaring.com\/dehydration-in-elderly-is-dangerous\/\">chronic under-hydration<\/a>, which can lead to a host of health concerns, such as UTIs, kidney stones, and even a heightened risk of falling.<\/p>\n<p>Senior dehydration can occur for a variety of reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Side effects from medications<\/li>\n<li>A diminished feeling of being thirsty<\/li>\n<li>Less efficient kidneys<\/li>\n<li>A decreased ability to maintain an ideal fluid level in the body<\/li>\n<li>And others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Knowing how much fluid a senior should consume each day, and tracking fluid intake, is key. There\u2019s a simple calculation you can use to help. Divide the senior\u2019s body weight by 1\/3, and ensure he or she drinks that many ounces of water each day. For instance, a senior who weighs 150 pounds needs to drink at least 50 ounces of water daily \u2013 a little over six cups.<\/p>\n<p>Spotting and getting help for dehydration in older adults quickly is crucial; it\u2019s much easier to correct a mild case of dehydration than a more severe one. Here\u2019s what you should watch for in the seniors you love:<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Senior Dehydration Red Flags (Mild):<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Dark-colored urine<\/li>\n<li>Less urine output<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth<\/li>\n<li>Lethargy<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Muscle cramping<\/li>\n<li>Feeling irritable<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Senior Dehydration Red Flags (Severe):<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<li>Disorientation<\/li>\n<li>Fast, faint pulse<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty walking<\/li>\n<li>Low blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Intensified muscle cramps<\/li>\n<li>Less elasticity in skin<\/li>\n<li>Dry, sunken eyes<\/li>\n<li>Bloating<\/li>\n<li>Faster breathing<\/li>\n<li>Convulsions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get immediate medical attention if you suspect dehydration in an older adult. Extremely dangerous health concerns can develop quickly when symptoms such as these are present.<\/p>\n<p>Prevent dehydration in seniors by providing plenty of fluids throughout the course of the day. Plain water is best, but you can also flavor the water with sliced cucumber or citrus fruit to make it more appealing. You can also try different temperatures to see what the senior prefers. In the morning, for instance, a warmed cup of water with lemon can be comforting.
