It can also be one of the most stressful.<\/p>\n<p>A 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caregiving.org\/caregiving-in-the-us-2020\/\">report<\/a> conducted by the AARP and the National Alliance on Caregiving found that the number of family caregivers has climbed from 18% of adults in 2015 to more than 21% in 2020. And 36% of these caregivers say their situation is \u201chighly stressful.\u201d If this stress is not addressed, it can affect physical, mental and emotional health.<\/p>\n<p>Caregiver burnout refers to the fatigue, stress, anxiety and depression caregivers experience when they don\u2019t get the help they need. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/caregiver-stress\/art-20044784\">Mayo Clinic<\/a> says there are several warning signs that indicate it\u2019s time to get some help.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Do you answer \u201cyes\u201d to any of these questions?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you feel overwhelmed or constantly worried?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel tired often?<\/li>\n<li>Are you getting too much sleep or not enough sleep?<\/li>\n<li>Are you gaining or losing weight?<\/li>\n<li>Do you become easily irritated or angry?<\/li>\n<li>Have you lost interest in activities you used to enjoy?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel sad?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have frequent headaches, bodily pain or other physical problems?<\/li>\n<li>Are you abusing alcohol or drugs, including prescription medication?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What you can do<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If signs show you&#8217;re headed toward caregiver burnout, or possibly already there, take steps now to deal with it before it becomes worse. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask for help. <\/strong>Is there a family member who can help you by running errands, cooking or spending time with your loved one so you get relief? Can you schedule that help on a regular basis?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seek in-home respite care.<\/strong> Consider hiring short-term in-home respite care through a home care agency or look into adult care centers and programs in your community.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check out<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/eldercare.acl.gov\/Public\/Index.aspx\"><strong>Eldercare Locator<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging that connects you to services for older adults and their families. You can also reach them at (800) 677-1116.
