Depth perception is off, which can make getting into water frightening. The need for a bath may not be understood as well as the bathroom itself. Your loved one could also just feel uncomfortable removing their clothing and having help with such an intimate activity.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that a few simple changes can make bathing less stressful for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Create a Calm Environment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Choose a time of day when your loved one is usually at their best\u2014for someone with Alzheimer\u2019s, the afternoon is often harder due to sundowning, so a morning bath routine may be a good place to start. Turn on the heat if needed, warm the bathroom beforehand, and gather all supplies (towels, soap, and clean clothes) before you begin.<\/p>\n<p>Soft lighting and a quiet, relaxed atmosphere can also help reduce anxiety.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Explain Each Step<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Speak slowly, maintain eye contact, and offer reassurance throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<br \/>\n\u201cLet\u2019s wash your hands first.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNow let\u2019s sit down.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m going to help wash your back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may also help to give your loved one a role in the bathing process.
