Here\u2019s how caregivers can gently build meaningful relationships \u2014 even when memory is changing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, dementia affects memory, reasoning, and communication \u2014 but emotional awareness often remains. This means a loved one or client may forget who you are or how many times they\u2019ve asked a question, but they will remember how you made them feel. Kindness, calm energy, and reassurance create the foundation of trust.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most powerful shifts a caregiver can make is to stop correcting and start connecting. If a loved one with dementia says they need to leave for work (even though they retired long ago), instead of correcting them, try asking about their job or what they enjoyed most. This approach reduces anxiety and preserves dignity. The goal isn\u2019t to get the facts \u2014 it\u2019s emotional comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Another helpful rule of thumb is to respond to feelings, not words. If a client becomes upset, begin by acknowledging their emotions \u2014 whether it\u2019s anger, frustration, or sadness. Once they feel heard, gently offer reassurance or redirect their attention with a calming activity. There\u2019s no need to reason, argue, or correct in the moment. Try not to take their words personally, and lead with patience and forgiveness. Memory loss is incredibly challenging, and compassion goes a long way.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Use the Power of Music &amp; Memory<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Music can unlock memories that conversation cannot. It can also improve mood and increase engagement. Never remind them they forgot or question their memory.<\/p>\n<p>Often, anxiety hides behind repeated questions.
