The start of a new school year brings excitement and sometimes loneliness for grandparents who may have spent summer days with their grandkids. But just because school is back in session doesn’t mean those intergenerational bonds have to fade. In fact, fall can be a beautiful time to nurture the connection between seniors and the young ones in their lives.
In this blog are some fun and meaningful ways to keep seniors and grandkids connected—even as the schedules get busier:
1. Send Notes in Lunchboxes
Encourage seniors to write short notes or draw a little picture for their grandchild’s lunchbox. It can be as simple as “Good luck on your test!” or “Guess what I saw outside today?” These tiny tokens of love can make a big impact on both ends.
2. Schedule After-School Catch-Up Calls
A quick FaceTime or phone call after school can help seniors stay in the loop. It gives kids someone to tell about their day—and it brings joy and purpose to a grandparent’s routine.
3. Help With Homework (Remotely or In-Person)
If a grandparent is feeling up for it, helping with reading or math practice is a great way to engage minds of all ages. Even just listening to a child read out loud or quizzing them on spelling words can make a child feel supported and a grandparent feel involved.
4. Create a “Mailbox” Exchange
If the family lives close, consider setting up a little mailbox at the front door where kids can leave drawings, crafts, or school updates—and grandparents can leave replies or treats! If they live farther away, this can become a pen-pal system through the real mail!
5. Display School Art & Photos in the Home
Encourage families to drop off or mail artwork and school pictures to display around the senior’s home. Seeing a child’s work on the fridge or mantel brings joy and keeps them part of the everyday atmosphere.
6. Plan a Fall Visit or Tradition
Maybe it’s baking pumpkin bread together or carving a pumpkin in October—setting a fall tradition gives everyone something to look forward to. Even if it’s just once a season, the memory lasts a lifetime. At Synergy HomeCare, we understand that connection is a key part of well-being—no matter the age. Our caregivers are here to help seniors stay involved in what matters most to them, including cherished time with family. Whether it’s helping write a letter, setting up a video call, or making space for a family visit, we support those everyday moments that mean everything.
