Caring for a family member or client with mobility challenges can be overwhelming. Simple daily tasks—getting out of bed, walking to the bathroom, or leaving the house—may require extra planning and support. At Synergy HomeCare, we believe that mobility challenges should never take away a person’s independence or quality of life.

Below is a guide on how to support a loved one with mobility challenges, while helping them remain safe, confident, and comfortable at home.

1. Start With Empathy and Communication

Before making changes or offering help, start by talking with them. You could start by asking how they are feeling about their mobility and listen to their fears or what’s frustrating. Be respectful of their preferences and routines and help come up with modifications if need be. For example, they could feel trapped in their bed at night due to fear of falling while getting up to use the bathroom. You could acknowledge their concern then help navigate different ways to get up at night safely.

2. Make the Home Safer for Everyday Movement

Like in the above example, a few small changes can greatly reduce the risk of falls and injuries:

• Remove loose rugs and clutter
• Install grab bars in bathrooms
• Ensure hallways and rooms are well-lit
• Rearrange furniture to allow clear walking paths
• Use non-slip mats in the shower and kitchen

Our Synergy HomeCare team can help families identify these safety risks and recommend simple adjustments that support safer movement at home.

3. Encourage Independence—Without Pushing

It’s natural to want to do everything for someone you love, but over-helping can actually reduce their confidence. It’s important to discover how to offer just the right level of support. Use phrases like, “How can I help?” instead of insisting on help and always allow them plenty of time to move at their own pace.

4. Use the Right Mobility Aids

Mobility tools can make a big difference when used correctly:

• Walkers or canes for balance
• Wheelchairs for longer distances
• Transfer benches for bathing
• Raised toilet seats for easier standing

Proper use matters. Our caregivers are experienced in assisting clients with mobility aids, transfers, and positioning to prevent strain or injury for both the client and family members.

5. Support Physical Strength and Confidence

Even with limited mobility, movement is important. Focus on maintaining strength and flexibility by encouraging exercises and stretches approved by a healthcare provider. Supported walks and seated leg or arm raises are just a few examples of gentle ways to stay strong. Don’t forget to celebrate small wins each day!

6. Know When Extra Help Is Needed

Mobility challenges can increase over time. Signs that additional support like homecare may be needed include:

• Frequent falls or near-falls
• Difficulty transferring from bed or chair
• Increased fear of moving
• Family caregiver exhaustion or injury
