READ MOREWhen Driving Stops: How Seniors in North County Actually Get Around

Companion-Transportation-Synergy-Mendon

When an older adult stops driving, the thing that actually shrinks is not their mileage. It is their world: the standing coffee with a friend, the Thursday appointment they used to handle alone, the grocery run that was also the only time they left the house that day. Families tend to focus on the conversation about giving up the keys and then discover the harder problem is the one that comes after it.

North County has more options than most families realize. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is usually why a family concludes “there’s nothing available.”

NCTD LIFT: the option most people misunderstand

LIFT is North County Transit District’s ADA paratransit service. Here is the part families get wrong: LIFT eligibility is based on disability, not age. Being 80 does not qualify someone. Having a physical, cognitive, or visual disability that prevents them from using the regular BREEZE bus or SPRINTER rail does.

If your loved one is eligible, LIFT is genuinely good. It runs the same days and hours as BREEZE and SPRINTER, and it serves areas within three quarters of a mile of a BREEZE route or SPRINTER station. It is curb-to-curb, though a driver can help beyond the curb, for instance to a front door, when a rider’s disability requires it. You need to say so when you book.

Practical details worth knowing before you call: trips must be reserved at least one day ahead and can be booked up to seven days out, at (760) 726-1111, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Every pickup has a 30-minute window, and the driver waits five minutes. Each leg is booked separately, so a round trip is two reservations. To start eligibility certification, call NCTD’s eligibility office at (760) 966-6645.

One bonus that offsets the hassle: certified LIFT riders get a free paratransit ID card that allows free travel on BREEZE, SPRINTER, and COASTER.

RideFACT: the option for everyone LIFT turns down

If your loved one does not qualify for LIFT, or lives outside its service area, RideFACT is usually the answer. It is run by FACT, and unlike LIFT it is age-based: it serves seniors 60 and older as well as people with disabilities who lack adequate transportation options.

RideFACT is curb-to-curb, covers all 18 cities in San Diego County, and operates Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Rides are requested three to seven days in advance by calling (888) 924-3228 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Fares are flat by distance: $5 for trips up to 10 miles, $10 for 10 to 20 miles, and $20 beyond that. For a Carlsbad-to-Encinitas medical appointment, that is a genuinely low number.

The tradeoff is that RideFACT is a rideshare service subject to demand and funding, so a reservation request is not guaranteed the way an ADA paratransit trip is.

Where each one breaks down

Both services require planning days ahead, and neither is built for “I need to leave in twenty minutes.” Neither one waits at the destination. And for a loved one with dementia, curb-to-curb service can be the wrong fit entirely, not because of the ride but because of everything on either end of it: finding the right entrance, remembering the return booking, managing the wait.

That is usually the point where families start looking at a caregiver who drives. Transportation to appointments, errands, and social outings is standard non-medical home care, and the difference is not the driving. It is that the same person walks in with them, waits, and brings them home, which turns a logistics problem back into an ordinary afternoon.

A reasonable way to sort this out

Start by getting LIFT eligibility determined, because it is free to be certified and the ID card has value even if you rarely book a trip. Register with RideFACT as the backup for everything outside LIFT’s service area. Then look honestly at the trips that are left over: the ones that need a person, not a vehicle.
