Care and Companionship for Alzheimer’s Disease

According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2012 edition of Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, currently “5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease.” The annual report also states that an “estimated 800,000 individuals with Alzheimer’s (one in eight), live alone…and up to half of them do not have an identifiable caregiver.”

It is unfortunate to know that one in eight seniors are living with a debilitating disease such as Alzheimer’s, but what is even more disheartening is to know so many go without someone to talk with or care for them on a daily basis. Alzheimer’s is an all-encompassing condition that drains mental, physical and emotional capabilities. Companionship is a great way to help people with Alzheimer’s to interact daily with others and give them a sense of well being.

Since Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are memory-inhibiting conditions, the people who have them may not recognize their surroundings or the people in their lives. From first diagnosis and throughout the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, a confidante and companion can be there for comfort, re-enforcement and personal care. Sometimes having someone nearby to comfort them during the complicated time can make a world of difference.

If someone you know and love is affected by Alzheimer’s, you know the toll it takes on those affected and those closest to them. Unfortunately, many times family members are unable to take care of loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s disease whether it is lack of knowledge or ability due to location.

SYNERGY HomeCare understands the many difficulties families go through when faced with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to providing caregivers that can help with everyday tasks that an Alzheimer’s patient may need, SYNERGY HomeCare caregivers can provide companionship services.

Also available to family caregivers is our Family Learning Center, which offers a free section specifically about caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

If a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and needs care, or if they need a companion that can be there as much as they need for interaction, SYNERGY HomeCare can meet those needs. Give us a call today and find out how our certified caregivers can provide the necessary care.
